East Asian and Other Specialized Input Character on openSUSE
As one that sometimes should work on Japanese environment, I sometimes need the east Asian IMEI input. With Microsoft operating system this can be achieved by installing East Asian / multi-language support character and IMEI. But how to achieve this condition on Linux? As a long-time linux user (mainly openSUSE, several Fedora and Centos and few Ubuntu) I got several question from people how to work in multi-language environment on linux. So here I will tell you to achieve this gentle reader. First see the lines below
- Arabic : اسلا م علئكم.
- Japanese hiragana-katakana: わたしわ エドウイヌ です
- Japanese kanji: 日本語
I type all of lines above on English keyboard using SCIM (Smart Common Input Method) input method implementation on openSUSE using SCIM-anthy. Luckily in openSUSE there is M17N repository that provide several program for people not using english keyboard (and or language). So the installation of SCIM-anthy on top of English based installation is quite easy. Just go to yast - software - software management, and type scim-anthy on search then accept (off course you can use "zypper in scim-anthy", anyway scim-anthy also take place on oss repository). For other distribution please use your prefer installation tools.
open yast and then select Software Management. Type scim-anthy on search, then click accept to start the installation.

Maybe you need to reboot your computer, then check the icon on panel. Scim-anthy icon is a keyboard icon if not active and become crown if active.

Don’t forget to setup scim on IMEngine - global setup and select all the input you want to use. Also edit and assign a hotkeys to call the input type anytime during the work on any program.
The default hotkeys shift+spacebar and ctrl+spacebar also can be used to switch the scim-anthy from active mode to non-active mode and vice-versa as well as to switch between the input type.
That’s all folks, till then keep safe and stop global warming.
